Hives are itchy pink spots on the skin that occur after the release of chemicals by the allergy cells of the body. The spots can vary in size, from very tiny to large in diameter and may be associated with swelling, or angioedema.
Food, medication, or viral infections can cause hives. Individual hives often last fewer than 24 hours but frequently are associated with recurring outbreaks that should be addressed by a dermatologist.
When hives last more than 6 weeks they are considered chronic. Our doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are skilled at developing effective treatment plans for acute and chronic hives.
