Frequently Asked Questions

  • Fraxel, also known as fractional resurfacing, is a revolutionary technology that produces thousands of deep tiny columns in your skin called microscopic thermal zones. These zones are very small, about one tenth the size of a hair follicle. These microscopic thermal zones stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin, which makes skin look more youthful. The laser treats portions of the skin without affecting the surrounding tissue, which reduces downtime and promotes the skin’s natural process for creating new, healthy skin.

  • Traditionally, two kinds of laser treatment have been available for cosmetic skin treatment: ablative and non-ablative. Ablative treatments, which use a high temperature to vaporize unwanted tissue, can be effective but with significant side effects and several weeks of recovery time. Non-ablative treatments such as Fraxel have very few side effects and low downtime, but they do require numerous treatments to produce results.

  • It is estimated that one treatment resurfaces about 20% of your skin’s surface, so you will usually need a series of laser treatments in order to see the best results. Our providers commonly recommend 3-5 treatments in total, each one about 4 weeks apart. The exact number of treatments varies and depends on your desired outcome, which can be discussed in a consultation.

  • Your skin will be cleansed prior to treatment. A topical anesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area approximately 60 minutes prior to treatment. The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes depending on the area treated.

  • Most patients describe the treatment as having a “prickling” sensation. The topical anesthetic cream and cool air are used during the procedure to help reduce discomfort.  After the treatment many patients say they feel like they have a sunburn, which subsides over the next day or two.

  • During the first 24 hours after a treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned, and it will appear pink or red. This discomfort can be reduced with ice packs. Your skin will naturally bronze over the next week or two, and as you continue treatment series, the sunburned-to-bronzed appearance will repeat. As with a sunburn, your skin will flake and exfoliate normally. Use of a moisturizer can reduce the appearance of dry flakes. Most patients return to their routine activities in 1-3 days after the treatment.

  • Avoid the sun 4-6 weeks before and after treatment. Patients who are actively tan or sunburned will need to reschedule their treatment session. Additionally you cannot be treated if you have a spray or artificial tan. Broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen SPF 30 or higher should be used after treatments. Post treatment guidelines will be provided after your treatment.

  • Results are immediate and progressive, with optimal improvement usually visible in a few months. This time frame and treatment structure allow for complete healing and the production of new collagen and elastin to replace damaged tissue. The better you take care of your skin and protect it from the sun, the better the results.

  • It depends on the size of the area that is being treated and number of treatments needed. A customized cost estimate will be given to you at your consultation with one of our providers.
