Travis Hayden, MPAS, PA-C – Completed his undergraduate studies at Le Moyne College with a degree in biology. Upon graduating he was awarded enrollment into the U.S. Navy’s Health Services Collegiate Program. Through the program he received his formal training as a physician assistant (PA) at the Sisters of Charity Medical Center of Staten Island, New York. He then proudly served on active duty as a Medical Service Corps Officer in the U.S. Navy, working as a PA in military and family medicine. During his time in the Navy, he completed his master’s degree in physician assistant studies from the University of Nebraska. While stationed at the U.S. Naval Academy he pursued his interest in dermatology through training with the dermatology department of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Since completing his tour in the Navy in 2003, he has been employed with Dermatology Associates of Rochester where he feels fortunate to be able to provide high quality dermatological care to the many patients in the Finger Lakes region of beautiful upstate New York.
Mr. Hayden is a Board-Certified PA and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and a Fellow member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA). He has served since 2005 as the SDPA’s Publications & Communications Committee Chair. In 2007 he became the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dermatology for Physician Assistants (JDPA), the official journal of the SDPA, where he continues to work and extend his passion for teaching to help educate the 2,600 plus members of the SDPA. For his dedication and continued voluntary work for the SDPA he has been awarded the SDPA Distinguished Service Award in 2009 and the SDPA Outstanding Committee Chair Award in 2013. In the fall of 2015, Mr. Hayden was honored by an appointment from the SDPA Board of Directors to serve on the inaugural Board of Trustees of the newly established Dermatology PA Foundation (DPAF). His work with the DPAF will focus exclusively on charitable and educational purposes where the DPAF can engage in research, scholarship, and philanthropy designed to improve the practice of dermatologic patient care by PAs and other medical professionals.
Mr. Hayden’s passion is focused on patient care and helping to educate healthcare professionals to improve the quality of care patients’ receive. To that end, since 2003 he has enjoyed teaching PA students and currently works as an adjunct instructor and preceptor for the Le Moyne College Physician Assistant Program and a clinical instructor and preceptor for the SUNY Upstate Medical University Physician Assistant Program. In 2013 he was honored to receive the Central New York Physician Assistant Association’s PA Educator of the Year award.
In addition to his academic teaching, Mr. Hayden has also provided many educational dermatology lectures to local physician offices and community groups and continues to volunteer his time as a dermatology medical liaison to the Franciscan Church of the Assumption Poverello Health Center and the Finger Lakes Community and Migrant Health Center (and has done the same in the past for the Central New York Down Syndrome Association and Vera House Women’s Shelter).
Mr. Hayden’s passion for medical education, teaching, and helping the underserved is rooted in his firm belief that, “whether with students, our peers, or with our patients…only good can come from the sharing of our medical knowledge.” When not at work, he enjoys spending time with his family in the great outdoors of upstate New York (in all four seasons!), traveling to new places, and coaching youth hockey.
